Austin Elopement Guide: How to Plan an Intimate Wedding That's Actually You

Elopements aren't just courthouse ceremonies anymore. Here's how to plan an intimate Austin wedding that's meaningful, personal, and completely stress-free.

Elopements used to mean just the two of you, going to the courthouse or running off to Vegas(which it still can, and I'm here for an Elvis officiant any day of the week).

Not anymore. After covid, couples started to realize that elopements could be a perfect fit for many reasons.

In 2026, it's for couples who want to get married without the stress, the performance, or the $40,000+ price tag of a traditional wedding. It's intimate ceremonies with just your closest people (or just the two of you). It's prioritizing what actually matters—your vows, your partner, your experience—over everything else.

I've photographed dozens of elopements across Austin and the Hill Country, and they're some of my favorite weddings to shoot. The couples are fully present. The days feel personal and intentional. And the photos? Incredible, because there's no rushing, no stress, no performance anxiety.

If you're thinking about eloping in Austin, here's everything you need to know to plan an intimate wedding that's meaningful, beautiful, and exactly how you envisioned it.

What does an elopement in 2026 look like?

A couple shares their first kiss as the flower girl dumps the flowers on the ground in the foreground of the frame. They are in an intimate airb&b on the lake with natural light.

The definition of "elopement" has evolved. It used to mean nobody knew you were getting married. Now it means a wedding that prioritizes intimacy over scale.

Here's what modern elopements look like:

  • Just the two of you — You, your partner, an officiant, and a photographer. No guests, no distractions, total focus on the moment.
  • Immediate family only — Parents, siblings, maybe grandparents. Usually 10 people or fewer.
  • Small ceremony, no reception — You say your vows, take photos, and maybe grab dinner after. The whole thing wraps in 2-3 hours.
  • Intimate ceremony, big party later — 20-30 guests for the ceremony, with a big blow out party at a later date to invite all your friends & extended family, without the stress of all eyes on you for the ceremony itself.

There's no single "right" way to elope. It's about designing a day that feels authentic to you—without the pressure of a traditional wedding.

Austin Elopement Venues: Where Intimacy Meets Style

If you want a structured venue experience (with the amenities, the aesthetic, and the "this is clearly a wedding" vibe), Austin has some incredible elopement-friendly options.

Sekrit Theater

A couple walks down the aisle after the ceremony, smiling as friends within the greenhouse of Sekrit Theater clap for them.

Sekrit Theater is an East Austin hidden gem—literally. It's an outdoor venue tucked away with string lights, greenery, and a completely private, intimate vibe.

Why it works for elopements: You can book it in 1.5+ hour increments, so you're not paying for a full-day rental when you only need a couple of hours. It's private, it's unique, and it photographs beautifully—especially at golden hour or after dark when the lights are glowing.

Best for: Couples who want a moody, romantic, slightly bohemian aesthetic without leaving Austin city limits.

Lincoln Chapel

A couple walks hand in hand down the aisle of lincoln chappel, locking eyes and smiling with the clean minimalist walls and benches of the chapel.

Lincoln Chapel is specifically designed for elopements and intimate weddings. It's clean, modern, minimalist, and stunningly beautiful.

Why it works for elopements: The space is small and intentional—it only works for intimate ceremonies. The design is timeless, so your photos won't look dated in 10 years. And it photographs beautifully at any time of day thanks to the natural light and thoughtful architecture.

Best for: Couples who love modern, minimalist design and want a dedicated ceremony space that feels elevated and intentional.

Chapel Dulcinea

A wide shot of the back of Chapel Dulcenia, with the couple centered and the bride's dress blowing in the wind.

Chapel Dulcinea offers free bookings—yes, free—for elopements and small weddings. It's a beautiful open-air chapel in the Texas Hill Country with sweeping views and incredible sunsets.

Why it works for elopements: If you're working with a tight budget, this is an unbeatable option. The catch? It's popular, so sunset time slots book up fast. But if you can snag a golden hour slot, the light and the views are absolutely killer.

Best for: Budget-conscious couples who want a stunning Hill Country backdrop without the venue cost.

Outdoor & Adventure Elopement Locations

If you want nature, epic views, and a less structured experience, these outdoor locations are perfect for intimate ceremonies.

Mt. Bonnell

A groom looking at his bride in the foreground as she looks over her shoulder towards the camera. They stand on a clearing on Mt. Bonnel so you can see Lake Austin & greenery behind them.

Mt. Bonnell is a classic Austin spot—a hill with panoramic views of the city and Lake Austin. It's iconic, it's accessible, and it's free.

Why it works for elopements: Stunning sunsets. Easy to get to (just a short climb up the stairs). Perfect for couples who want a just-the-two-of-you vibe without traveling far from the city.

Logistics tip: Go on a weekday during sunset hours to avoid crowds. Weekends can get busy with tourists and other photo sessions.

Best for: Couples who want classic Austin views and a relaxed, no-fuss outdoor ceremony.

Enchanted Rock

Couple walking across the stone surface of Enchanted Rock. The wide landscape and blue skies surround them as birds fly in the distance.

Enchanted Rock is straight-up stunning—massive pink granite domes, panoramic Hill Country views, and a true adventure elopement experience.

Why it works for elopements: If you're willing to hike (it's about a mile to the summit, some scrambling involved), you get some of the most epic views in Texas. It feels like you've traveled to Utah or Colorado, but it's just 90 minutes from Austin.

Logistics tip: You'll need a Texas State Parks Pass and a parking reservation (the park reaches capacity quickly, especially on weekends). Plan to start the hike at sunrise or a couple of hours before sunset to avoid the midday heat and harsh light.

Best for: Adventurous couples who want dramatic landscapes and don't mind a hike to get there.

Travis County Downtown Courthouse

A couple in front of the Texas State Capitol, dressed in wedding attire lit with studio lighting, with blue-hour lighting behind them. The capitol is lit up with warm orange light.

The Travis County Downtown Courthouse is the classic "let's just get married" option, but it can be beautiful if you lean into it.

Why it works for elopements: You can book a date and have one of their judges marry you on-site—no need to hire a separate officiant. The courthouse facade is gorgeous and historic, perfect for photos. And afterward, you can extend your session and explore downtown Austin for more diverse backdrops (South Congress, the Capitol, Rainey Street).

Logistics tip: You'll need a marriage license from Travis County first (no waiting period in Texas, so you can get it the same day).

Best for: Couples who love the simplicity of a courthouse ceremony but still want beautiful photos and a bit of adventure afterward.

Planning Timeline: How Far in Advance to Book

A couple walks down the path of Capel Dulcenia, led by their golden retriever in the warm glow of the sun.

Elopements are simpler than traditional weddings, but you still need to plan ahead—especially for popular venues and photographers.

3-6 months out:

  • Decide on your elopement style (just the two of you, immediate family, small group)
  • Choose your location (venue vs. outdoor)
  • Book your photographer (good elopement photographers book up 4-6 months in advance, especially for weekends and golden hour time slots)
  • Book your venue (if using one)

2-3 months out:

  • Hire your officiant (if not using a courthouse judge or venue-provided officiant)
  • Get your marriage license (you can do this closer to the date, but don't forget—Texas requires both of you to apply in person)
  • Plan your attire (you can keep it simple or go full wedding attire—it's your call)

1 month out:

  • Confirm all vendor details (photographer timeline, officiant arrival time, venue access)
  • Write your vows (if you're doing personal vows)
  • Plan any post-ceremony celebration (dinner reservation, small gathering, etc.)

1 week out:

  • Get your marriage license if you haven't already
  • Confirm timeline with your photographer and officiant
  • Make a list of & pack any items you're bringing (rings, bouquet, champagne for a toast, etc.)

Elopements move faster than traditional weddings, but you still want to give yourself enough time to book the people and places that matter.

What to Expect from Your Elopement Photographer

I've shot a lot of elopements, and here's what I bring to the day (and what you should expect from any elopement photographer):

Timeline Planning Help

Even though elopements are shorter and simpler than traditional weddings, the timeline still matters. I help you figure out:

  • What time to start based on lighting (golden hour, sunrise, midday, etc.)
  • How much time to allocate for getting ready, the ceremony, and couples portraits
  • How to build in breathing room so the day doesn't feel rushed

Location Scouting & Guidance

If you're not sure where to elope, I can help. I know which locations photograph well at different times of day, which require permits or reservations, and which feel private vs. crowded.

Posing Without the Awkwardness

Elopements are intimate, which means there's no hiding in a crowd. I guide you through natural, authentic poses that feel like you—not stiff, not overly directed, just the two of you being present with each other.

The Full Story

Even though your elopement might only last 1-3 hours, I'm capturing the full story: getting ready, the walk to your ceremony spot, the vows, the first kiss, couples portraits, the celebration (if you're doing one). You'll get a complete gallery that documents the entire experience.

Elopement Photography Pricing in Austin

Elopement photography typically costs less than full wedding day coverage because you're booking fewer hours—but the rate per hour is usually similar.

Typical Austin elopement photography pricing:

  • 2-3 hours of coverage: $800 - $1,800
  • Half-day (4-5 hours): $1,800 - $3,000
  • Full day (6+ hours, if you're doing ceremony + extended portraits + reception): $3,000 - $5,000+

Most of my elopement clients book 2-3 hours, which is enough time to capture getting ready, the ceremony, and couples portraits at one or two locations. If you're planning a longer day or want to hit multiple locations, a half-day package makes sense.

For context, Austin wedding photography for a full traditional wedding averages $3,000 - $5,000 for 6-8 hours, so elopements offer significant savings if you're keeping things short and intimate.

FAQ: Eloping in Austin

Do we need a permit to elope at outdoor locations?

It depends on the location. Mt. Bonnell and most city parks don't require a permit for small ceremonies (usually defined as fewer than 20 people with no chairs, arches, or structures). Enchanted Rock requires a day-use entry fee and parking reservation along with a photography permit.

If you're planning anything more formal (chairs, an arch, amplified music), check with the specific park or location about permit requirements.

Can we elope the same day we get our marriage license in Texas?

Yes. Texas has no waiting period for marriage licenses. You can apply for your license and get married the same day. The license is valid for 90 days after it's issued.

What if it rains on our elopement day?

Outdoor elopements come with weather risk. I always recommend having a backup plan—either a covered outdoor location, an indoor venue, or flexibility to reschedule if the forecast is truly terrible.

For what it's worth, some of my favorite elopement photos have happened on overcast or drizzly days. The light is soft and flattering, and there's something romantic about embracing the weather instead of fighting it.

How do we find an officiant for our elopement?

If you're not using a courthouse judge, you'll need to hire an officiant. You can find Austin-area officiants through:

  • The Knot has an extensive directory of officiants
  • Recommendations from your photographer (I work with several officiant I trust and recommend)
  • Local wedding planning groups and forums

Expect to pay $150 - $800 for an officiant, depending on travel, ceremony length, and whether you want a pre-written script or a fully customized ceremony.

Why Elope? (And Why Austin?)

A couple sits on the stairs of the Airb&b sharing an intimate moment eating a pizza together, relaxed and in each others arms.

Elopements aren't for everyone. But if you're drawn to the idea of an intimate, intentional, stress-free wedding day—one that's about you and your partner, not the guest list or the seating chart or the budget—eloping might be exactly what you're looking for.

Austin and the Hill Country offer incredible variety for elopements: modern venues, outdoor adventures, historic locations, and everything in between. The weather is (mostly) cooperative in spring and fall, and summer is doable for short ceremonys or indoor venues. And the vibe of the city—creative, laid-back, non-traditional—makes it the perfect place to design a wedding day that feels like you.
